Mike Vegas Dommermuth, who lives and works in Venice, California, uses the visual language of graffiti to create layered abstract paintings tha texplore transformation, authorship, and decay. Working with hand cut paper stencils, he spray paints intricate patterns onto canvas and paper, building compositions through repetition and erosion. These stencils, initially precise, gradually disintegrate over time, introducing unpredictability and allowing the imagery to evolve beyond its original structure.
For Dommermuth, stencil making is an act of drawing. By folding and cutting paper into arrangements of lines, circles, and semi circles, he develops a visual vocabulary that is entirely his own rather than borrowed from historical or cultural motifs. The resulting forms operate in a dynamic interplay of positive and negative space, where layered patterns push and pull against one another to generate secondary images and shifting perceptions.
Central to his practice is an interest in broken systems. As the stencils degrade, the ordered logic of the compositions begins to collapse, giving way to organic forms and emergent figures. What begins as control transitions into chance, revealing the tension between structure and entropy.
Raised in Las Vegas, Dommermuth draws lasting influence from the visual intensity of his surroundings. The luminous marquees and ever shifting neon facades of casino signage inform both the scale and rhythm of his work, reflecting an enduring fascination with spectacle, repetition, and light that continues to shape his practice. -
